It is a long way as compared to Manali but it is open throughout the year. Also, the plus side is that you can visit Kinnaur Valley on your way from Shimla. Kalpa and Chitkul,in particular, are two places that cannot be missed. The biggest plus point for me was that when you travel to Spiti Valley via Shimla, you climb up slowly. The route from Manali to Kaza is shorter than the way to Shimla, though the road condition is dire.In fact, most parts do not even have roads. There are just rocks and lots of water crossings. There are two passes on the way–Rohtang Pass and Kunzum Pass which close the moment of snowfall. So you have to keep an eye on the weather conditions.Another downside of this route is the problem of AIIMS.You will cover a distance of 2050 meters to 3800 meters in 10 hours. Some people may have this problem. If you stop at Chandratal, you will be at 4250 meters. On climbing such a height from Manali, a large number of people come down with AMS.Make sure your bike or car is in good working condition and you are all set for the crazy yet beautiful road from Manali to Spiti valley.
